We have a pandemic sweeping the continent. Not COVID-19, but the real issue; the realization that content consumption has nearly replaced hobbies, and the dark reality that people are -gasp- running out of content. But no fear! Podcasts and audiobooks are wonderful for the transitional period of taking on a new hobby (or just deep cleaning your house). Put these on in the background as you attempt to re-learn how to knit or bake a batch of cookies, and while you may burn your cookies, you’ll at least have enjoyed the podcast.

I’m very picky about podcasts and audiobooks; the writing has to be good, the audio engaging, and it has to be easy to follow. Below, I go through my favourites, and why they’re worth your time

Sawbones

This husband-wife duo of dunce and doctor explores the stupid ways we’ve tried to fix ourselves through history. Short, entertaining, well researched, and funny, this podcast explores medical history across the globe. Their recent episodes about quarantine and COVID-19 are topical, comforting, and an excellent way to reground yourself if you’re feeling confused and uneducated. Available as a podcast from most platforms.

Lore

This podcast staple tells local lore and stories. The blending of real-life and story, the slight tinge of horror keeps the audience engaged, and is a fantastic way to sink into the apocalyptic feeling of the current situation. With hundreds of episodes and a few amazon prime seasons, it’s safe to say Lore is a cult favourite in the podcast world. Available as a podcast from most platforms.

A History of the World in 6 Glasses

Up to learn something new? Tom Standage details world history through the drinks we’ve consumed: beer, wine, coffee, tea, spirits, and Coca-Cola. Discussing the history of fermentation, politics, social standards, and more. Entertaining and sure to leave you with more fun facts than you’ll know what to do with. Enjoyable, and will leave you with a new view of your favourite beverages. Available as an audiobook from most platforms.

Kitchen Confidential

Narrated by the man himself, this vulgar, entertaining, and much-loved depiction of the world behind the menu gives the public a better idea of what just might be going on in the back of house. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll wrapped in some of the top American restaurants, Anthony Bourdain leaves you understanding the value of hard work, the magic of the world beneath your feet, and a little advice on how to handle the world around you. Available as an audiobook from most platforms.

Noble Blood

A dive into the deaths of Europe’s various royalty in history, the voice of Noble Blood is calming despite the bloody and tragic events it depicts. Love, loss, and heart break, exposing the historical figures we think we knew for the people they actually were. Available as a podcast from most platforms

Myths and Legends

The clever, quirky blending of folktales and myths from across the world is entertaining, modernized and, for the most part, family-friendly. This diverse approach to the world of stories is intelligent and keeps you laughing. The addition of the ‘creature of the week’ segment exposes you to some of the strangest and most interesting mythical creatures across the world. Available as a podcast from most platforms.

Good Omens

Now a tv show on Amazon Prime, the original book, coauthored by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, is every bit as quirky, wild, and strange as you’d expect. Detailing the path of an angel and demon duo working together to prevent the apocalypse, this is one of the best audiobooks I’ve enjoyed. With interruptions by the voice of God herself, and queen songs strung throughout, it’s sure to distract you from the very different end-of-the-world that’s going on outside our windows. Available as an audiobook from most platforms.

The Dark Web

This informative feat of investigative journalism digs into the darkest part of the internet you’ll likely never visit. Discussing cryptocurrency, ethics in the wild west, and the illegal amazon that has cropped into the invention of the American government, Dark Web is fascinating, topical, and opens your eyes to one of humanity’s lowest spaces. Avaliable from Audible.

Those are some of my favourite to listen to at a moment, but leave your favourite in the comments!
